PUERTO VIEJO – Guide to Costa Rica’s Carribean Gem

    by Yasmine September 9, 2024
    written by Yasmine

We recently spent 5 days in Puerto Viejo, a vibrant town located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast,  known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and laid-back vibe and it was one of our trip’s highlights. This small yet lively destination is perfect for travelers looking to experience Costa Rica’s rich culture and natural beauty.

We also documented a day in this Caribbean town in an episode and this was an interesting day to say at least, so watch it to learn more about the vibes, prices and things to do in Puerto Viejo.

Where to Stay in Puerto Viejo

    Budget-Friendly Options:

    1. Rocking J’s Hostel

Located just steps from the beach, Rocking J’s Hostel is an iconic spot for budget travelers and backpackers. It offers a unique experience with options to sleep in hammocks, tents, or private rooms. The hostel has a lively social atmosphere, complete with a bar, communal kitchen, and colorful decor made by travelers.

    2. Hotel Pura Vida

This cozy, family-run hotel provides affordable rooms with private bathrooms and fans. Surrounded by a lush garden, it’s a peaceful spot to relax after a day of exploring. The friendly owners are always happy to share tips on the best local spots to visit.

    Mid-Range Accommodations:

    1. Hotel Banana Azul

Just north of Puerto Viejo, Hotel Banana Azul is an adults-only, beachfront boutique hotel offering comfortable rooms and suites with Caribbean-style decor. With a beautiful garden, pool, and an on-site restaurant serving fresh, local cuisine, this hotel provides a more relaxed, upscale experience while still being close to the action.

    2. Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel

A bit more upscale, Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel is known for its modern design and chic white interiors, which contrast beautifully with the surrounding jungle. The hotel features a pool, beach club, and restaurant. It’s a great option for travelers looking to splurge a little on their Caribbean getaway.

    Cahuita Park

Best things to do in Puerto Viejo

    Cahuita National Park:

A short drive from Puerto Viejo, this park offers beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife spotting, including monkeys, sloths, and various bird species. We really enjoyed this park, because it’s less visited, the entrance ticket is affordable and we saw a lot of monkeys, coatis, racoons and even a sloth!

    Enjoy the beaches:
    1. Playa Cocles – Just a short bike ride from the town center, Playa Cocles is a beautiful stretch of golden sand and turquoise waters. It’s popular among surfers due to its consistent waves, but also offers areas perfect for swimming and relaxing. Beachfront shacks serve up cold drinks and snacks, making it a great spot to spend the day.
    2. Playa Negra – Known for its distinctive black sand, Playa Negra is a unique beach located just north of Puerto Viejo. It’s less crowded than some of the other beaches and offers a peaceful setting to enjoy the natural surroundings. It’s a great spot for a morning walk or a quiet afternoon of sunbathing.
    3. Punta Uva – A bit further south from Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. With calm, clear waters, it’s ideal for snorkeling, swimming, or simply lounging in the sun. The beach is surrounded by lush jungle, giving it a secluded, untouched feel.

    Indulge in Caribean food:

Puerto Viejo is known for its delicious Caribbean cuisine, which blends flavors from Afro-Caribbean, indigenous, and Costa Rican influences. Be sure to try dishes like rice and beans with coconut milk, jerk chicken, and patacones (fried plantains). Soda Lidia’s Place and Koki Beach Restaurant are popular spots to savor authentic local dishes.

    Street Food and Markets:

For a more casual dining experience, explore the street food stalls and local markets. You’ll find fresh fruits, empanadas, and homemade coconut sweets that make for great snacks. The local farmers’ market, held weekly, is also a great place to pick up fresh produce and handmade crafts.

    Nightlife and Bars:

Puerto Viejo has a vibrant nightlife scene with numerous bars and clubs playing reggae, salsa, and calypso music. Lazy Mon and Tasty Waves Cantina are popular hangouts where you can enjoy live music, dancing, and cocktails right on the beach.

Puerto Viejo, with its mix of beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant culture, offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly adventure or a more relaxed, mid-range experience, this Caribbean gem is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
