Visiting León, Nicaragua offers a blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty. As one of the country’s oldest cities, it boasts stunning colonial architecture, like the iconic León Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond its historical charm, León offers adventure seekers opportunities for volcano boarding down Cerro Negro, exploring nearby beaches like Las Peñitas, and immersing in local art.
Getting to Leon
The infrastructure in Nicaragua is not the best, but the good thing is that there are plenty of companies offering shuttles from the main cities in Nicaragua and from the neighboring countries.
Due to its location, Leon will probably be your first or last destination in Nicaragua. We got here at the end of our trip in the country, from Granada, and left Leon to get to El Salvador. We booked both ways through Bigfoot Hostel. To get to Leon from Granada was really easy as it was around 2 hours drive, but to get to El Salvador was a bit more of a struggle as it involved a boat as well (we wanted to avoid crossing Honduras). Anyways, the shuttle company will take care of everything, even pick you up from your accommodation and drop you off at the next one.
