Getting to Santa Ana from San Salvador

1. By Bus:
   This is the way we chose and it was really convinient. Take bus 201 from the Terminal de Occidente in San Salvador to Santa Ana.
   Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
   Cost: around $0.90 to $1.50.
2. By car or taxi. More expensive but provides direct and convenient travel.
3. Private Shuttle: This can be arranged through travel agencies or hotels.

Where to Stay in Santa Ana

Whether you’re a budget traveler or looking for more comfortable accommodations, Santa Ana has a variety of lodging options to suit your needs.

Best things to do in Santa Ana

1. Visit the Santa Ana Cathedral

The Cathedral is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture. Completed in the early 20th century, it features intricate details and impressive stained glass windows. It’s a must-see for architecture enthusiasts and those interested in religious history.

2. Explore the Santa Ana Theater

 Built in 1910, it is a beautifully restored theater that hosts a variety of cultural events, including plays, concerts, and dance performances. The interior, with its elegant design and detailed decorations, is as captivating as the performances themselves.

3. Wander Around the Central Plaza

The Central Plaza, or Parque Libertad, is a vibrant area surrounded by historical buildings. It’s a great place to relax, people-watch, and enjoy local street food. The plaza often hosts events and festivals, offering a glimpse into the local culture.

4. Hike the Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec)

For adventure seekers, hiking the Santa Ana Volcano is a must. This was definitely the highlight of El Salvador for me. The hike offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the crater lake at the summit. The trail is well-marked, and the trek typically takes about 4 hours round trip.

I would recommend joining a tour as it includes transportation and the guide (which is mandatory, by the way). This is a very good rated tour. Otherwise, you can go on your own (by taxi/bus/motorbike) and then hire a guide on the spot.

5. Enjoy Coatepeque Lake

Coatepeque Lake is a beautiful volcanic crater lake located about 18 kilometers from Santa Ana. The lake is perfect for swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water. There are also several restaurants around the lake where you can enjoy local cuisine with a view.

6. Explore the Izalco Volcano

Another impressive volcano near Santa Ana is the Izalco Volcano, known as the “Lighthouse of the Pacific” due to its historical eruptions visible from the sea. You can hike to the summit for breathtaking views and a unique experience.

7. Discover the Mayan Ruins of Tazumal

Located just a short drive, Tazumal ruins are part of a large Maya archaeological site. Explore the pyramids, tombs, and ancient artifacts that date back to as early as 100 AD. The site also has a small museum with informative displays.

8. Visit Finca Santa Leticia

Experience El Salvador’s renowned coffee culture with a tour of Finca Santa Leticia. Learn about the coffee production process from bean to cup and enjoy tasting some of the finest coffee in the region. The finca also offers accommodations if you wish to stay overnight.

9. Explore Ruta de las Flores

You can visit Ruta de las Flores from Santa Ana, and it makes for an excellent day trip or even a multi-day excursion. The Ruta de las Flores (Route of the Flowers) is a scenic 36-kilometer route that winds through several charming towns in the highlands of El Salvador, known for its beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history.
Since our time was a bit limited, we only had the chance to visit one town on the route, and we chose Juayua. Juayúa is perhaps the most popular town on the Ruta de las Flores, renowned for its weekend food festival, Feria Gastronómica.
