Nestled in the highlands of Guatemala, Antigua is a city that effortlessly captured our hearts. Me and Alex spent three magical weeks in this charming colonial town, and even after that time, there were still countless activities, sights, and experiences left to explore. We’re actually considering returning for a longer period, but that’s a story for another time!
Whether you’re planning a short visit or considering a longer stay, this guide will help you make the most of your time in Guatemala’s most beautiful city.

Antigua, Guatemala
What to Do in Antigua, Guatemala
Antigua, Guatemala is a treasure trove of activities, historical landmarks, and cultural experiences. Here’s a comprehensive list of things to do in this enchanting city:
1. Admire Santa Catalina Arch
It’s hard to miss this one! Probably the most iconic symbols of Antigua, the Santa Catalina Arch offers a picturesque view with the Agua Volcano in the background. It’s a perfect spot for photos and soaking in the colonial architecture.

2. Relax in the Central Park (Parque Central)
Spend some time relaxing in Central Park, the heart of Antigua. It’s a great place to people-watch, enjoy street performances, and soak up the local atmosphere. If you happen to be during the Easter festivities, which in my opinion, is a bucket list experience, the whole center will become an open air celebration.

3. Hike Acatenango Volcano
This was the best experience of our lives, and I highly recommend everyone to do it – it’s something incredible! To see an active volcano eruption every 15 minutes from the top of another volcano, over the clouds, it’s breathtaking…Antigua is the perfect base from where to start the trip, as it’s just 30 minutes by car from the starting point of the trek. Yes, it will be hard, but it will be worth it! Just make sure you book the tour in advance, because spaces do fill up fast, and be in Antigua a few days before to aclimatize. This is a very good rated tour for 2 days 1 night.

4. Hike Pacaya Volcano
If Acatenango climb is a bit too much for you (you need to have a certain physical fitness), a guided hike to the summit of this active volcano is better, because the bije is moderately challenging. You will still have a unique experience of roasting marshmallows over volcanic vents while enjoying panoramic views.
5. Cerro de la Cruz
For a less strenuous outing, hike or drive up to the Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint. From here, you’ll get stunning panoramic views of Antigua and the surrounding volcanoes.
6. Shop for souvenirs at Mercado de Artesanías
Here you can shop for unique handmade crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. It’s a great place to pick up gifts and support local artisans. Even if you don’t need anything, you will find something worth buying, and for super affordable prices!
One day we went to all 3 markets of Antigua – the Artesans one, the central Mercado and the second hand market and I shot a video about them – because for me, going to the markets is one of the most authentic mode to understand the way of living of the local people.

7. Visit the houses of hobbits at Hobbitenango
Very interesting and pretty place to spend half a day outside the city, if you are too overwhelmed with the beauty of Antigua. Being on top of a hill, you will have panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and volcanoes. Hobbitenango is not only a place for photography lovers, but there are also plenty outdoor activities that you can engage in such as hiking, zip-lining, mini golfing and archery.

8. Go on a day trip to the biggest market in Guatemala
Chichicastenango turned out to be one of my favorite places in Guatemala! I told you I love markets, but this one is truly special. It’s one of the largest and most colorful in Central America and it offers a deep dive into Mayan culture and traditions. Plan ahead, because the market is only held on Thursdays and Sundays!

9. Enjoy the coffee scene
The coffee in Guatemala is one of the best I’ve had in Central America, and Antigua is the perfect spot to indulge in plenty coffee cups because there are so many beautiful cafes here!
Favorite coffee shops: El Gran Cafe, Artista de Cafe, 12 Onzas

10. Enjoy the food (local and international)
Apart from the coffee, the food in Antigua is another reason I would move here. There are so many restaurants, for every taste, from every cuisine in the world, and we ate at so many restaurants and we loved almost every dish!
Favorite restaurants: Samsara, AM BKFST, Ta’Cool
