Kuala Lumpur, the vibrant capital of Malaysia, is a melting pot of cultures, stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and countless attractions waiting to be explored.
I honestly had no expectations from Kuala Lumpur or from Malaysia in general, but I have to say it soon became one of my favorite cities ever!
Here’s the first video we filmed in Kuala Lumpur with out first impressions of the city. I recommend you watch it before heading to Kuala Lumpur so you know what to expect.
In this comprehensive guide, I’ll provide you with essential information on what to do, where to stay, how to get around, and a few insider tips to help you have an unforgettable journey as we did!
Getting From the Airport:
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is the main gateway to the city. Here’s what you should know:
- The most convenient and cost-effective way to reach the city center is by taking the KLIA Ekspres train. It’s a swift 28-minute ride that connects you to KL Sentral Station.
- Alternatively, you can opt for a taxi or ride-sharing service like Grab. We paid around 14$ for a ride with Grab from the airport to the center because we arrived late at night. It was super smooth and convinient.

Where to Stay:
Kuala Lumpur offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels. Here are some areas to consider:
Bukit Bintang:
This bustling area is perfect if you want to be at the center of the action. It’s home to numerous shopping malls, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. It’s pretty much around the area we stayed in.
Some budget-friendly accommodation (less than 50$/night):
Ceylonz Suites KL City
Iyf Raja Chulan Kuala Lumpur
KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre):
If you’re looking for a more upscale experience, KLCC offers stunning views of the Petronas Towers and easy access to KLCC Park.
Great options for less than 100$/night:
Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur
Crystal Suites at Eaton, KLCC
Chinatown:
For an authentic cultural experience, stay in Chinatown. It’s known for its bustling markets, street food, and historic temples.
Getting Around:
Kuala Lumpur has several transportation options to help you navigate the city with ease:
- Grab: Grab is a popular ride-sharing service in Kuala Lumpur and a convenient way to get around the city. It’s reliable, cost-effective, and can be accessed through the mobile app. It’s honestly so cheap that you’ll probably never use public transportation (guilty!)
- Light Rail Transit (LRT): The LRT system is a quick way to move around Kuala Lumpur. It’s well-connected, and you can purchase single-ride tickets or reloadable cards for multiple journeys.
- Free Bus Services: The city offers free Go KL buses that circulate through various neighborhoods, providing an excellent opportunity to explore on a budget.
- Walking: Kuala Lumpur felt really safe and we walked a lot during our time in the city. For us it’s a nice way to discover more of the city and adventure to off the beaten path places.

Must-Do Activities in Kuala Lumpur:
KLCC Park:
KLCC Park, with its lush greenery and iconic water fountains, is an excellent place to relax and enjoy stunning views of the Petronas Twin Towers. Tip: you can take some beautiful pictures with the Petronas Towers here, without having anyone in the picture (see below)

Petronas Towers:
No visit to Kuala Lumpur is complete without admiring the Petronas Towers. You can visit the observation deck for breathtaking vistas of the city. You can buy Skip-the-Line Tickets in advance from here.
For even more amazing view of the towers, head there after the sunset to see the towers and the city lit up. It’s so beautiful!

Jalan Alor:
Dive into the vibrant street food scene at Jalan Alor. It’s a culinary paradise offering a plethora of local and international delights. Tip: try the Durian fruit – the most controversial fruit on earth! Honestly, we started to like it in Malaysia, we had tried it before in Thailand but the fruit is originally from Malaysia so you’d expect it to be better.

Batu Caves:
Easily accessible via Grab or as part of a guided tour, the Batu Caves are a must-visit. Batu Caves is one of the most important Hindu religious sites outside of India. It’s dedicated to Lord Murugan, and the site plays a vital role in Hindu festivals and ceremonies. Visiting allows you to experience the spiritual essence of Malaysia’s diverse culture. Also, the caves themselves are a natural wonder, formed over millions of years so the place is a unique blend of spirituality and nature’s artistry.

We easily got here by Grab, but if you are more keen to join a guided tour, here’s one I reccommend.
Shopping:
Kuala Lumpur offers a diverse shopping scene for both apparel and gadgets. Whether you’re looking for high-end fashion, unique items, or the latest electronic devices, you’ll find a shopping experience that suits your preferences and budget. We had some hard times finding the latest electronic devices (drone, camera) in other countries in Asia, but here we found everything we were looking for.

Melaka (Malacca):
I highly reccomend a visit to Melaka, either as a day trip or an overnight stay, depending on your time. We honestly regret not having stayed for the night, but we will sure return someday. Melaka is a UNESCO World Heritage city and is known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and unique culture. You can get here by bus or you can join a tour.

- Stay Hydrated: The weather can be hot and humid, so carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
