Phuket – must visit destination for Thailand first-timers

by Yasmine

Phuket was our gate to Thailand, the first destination we discovered in this beautiful country where we got to spend almost 3 months, and it was love at first sight.  It’s a tropical paradise located in southern Thailand, known for its beautiful beaches, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife. Whether you’re a beach lover, a culture buff, or an adventure seeker, there’s something for everyone in Phuket, which is why I would definitely recommend Phuket for Thailand first timers!

Here are a few things you can do to make the most of your time in this magical place.
1.Visit the beaches:

Phuket is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, with crystal clear waters and powdery white sands. Some of the most popular beaches include Patong, Kata, and Karon, all of which are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Karon is my favorite since I spent one week in the area and I watched some of the most amazing sunsets here!
Tip: apart from these wide and popular beaches, there are some small, lesser known, beautiful beaches you might have never heard of such as: Freedom beach, Banana beach, Nui beach…

2.Explore the old town

Take a stroll through the charming streets of Phuket’s old town, which is filled with charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful street art, and delicious street food. I would advise you visit Phuket old town during the weekend because that’s when its famous weekend market is held, which is one of our favorites in Thailand! The food you’ll find there…yumm!

3.Go on a day trip

Phuket is surrounded by a number of beautiful islands, each with its own unique charm. Take a day trip to nearby islands – Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Yao Noi etc or take a boat tour to see the famous limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay and the famous James Bond Island.
Tip: If you have time, I would allow a few days for Koh Yao islands and Phi Phi island, but even for one day, it’s a well worth hassle!

4.Visit The Big Buddha

This 45 meter statue of Buddha has become one of Phuket’s symbols. It is visible from almost every corner of the island, but it’s even more impressive from up-close.

5.Indulge in delicious food

Phuket is famous for its delicious Thai food, and you’ll find plenty of street vendors, restaurants, and night markets serving up all kinds of tasty treats. Be sure to try the famous local dish, “Phad Thai,” which is a stir-fried noodle dish, usually with prawns or chicken and peanuts. Other personal favorites from the Thai cuisine are Mango Sticky rice, Massaman Curry and Coconut soup!

6.Go diving or snorkeling

The waters around Phuket are home to a diverse array of marine life, including colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. Go diving or snorkeling to explore the underwater world, and you may even spot some sea turtles or sharks! Don’t worry if you are a begginer because you’ll find plenty of diving clubs willing to teach and guide you.

7.Enjoy a traditional Thai massage

Phuket is home to a number of traditional Thai massage parlors, where you can relax and rejuvenate your body and mind. A traditional Thai massage is a must-do, trust me it will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.

8.Enjoy the bustling nightlife

Phuket is among the most popular nightlife areas in Thailand. If you are looking for a fun night out, check Bangla road, in Patong beach. It may be a bit overwhelming, but it will be indeed unforgettable!
