SAN SALVADOR – 10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN EL SALVADOR’S VIBRANT CAPITAL

San Salvador, the vibrant capital of El Salvador, offers a variety of activities that cater to diverse interests. I’m so glad I gave it a chance (as I can’t say it was high on my travel list) because it turned out to be one of my favorite cities around Central America! That not only because of the charm of the city, but also because of its people, and I am sure you will understand what I’m saying once you step foot in El Salvador!

I’m so happy I got to shoot the first day in San Salvador as it’s a day I will never forget!

Here’s a list of the best things to do in San Salvador which includes my recommendations of places to visit, things to eat and some personal insights that will make your experience in El Salvador’s capital complete.

1. Visit the National Library

It’s not something I do in each capital city, but you can’t miss this one, as its located right in the center and its design will definitely attract you. It’s free to visit and I would recommend it not only for book lovers, but also if you want to see how youngsters spend their free time.

The new National Library not only features a contemporary design, but it also houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and digital resources. It has multiple floors, each dedicated to different functions to maximize the space for various activities and resources. You will even find floors dedicated to games or even virtual reality stations – so there’s something for everyone!

2. Visit the National Palace

The National Palace, built in the early 20th century, is a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture. It houses various government offices and offers guided tours that provide insights into El Salvador’s history and governance. To understand more about the culture and history I always recommend joining a guided tour. This particular one will take you through the main plazas and you will visit the most important buildings around the city.

3. Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador:

Visit the beautiful cathedral, home to the tomb of Archbishop Óscar Romero, a key figure in El Salvador’s history. The cathedral’s architecture and serene atmosphere are worth exploring.

4. Stroll Through Plaza Libertad

Plaza Libertad is a significant historical site and the heart of downtown San Salvador. Surrounded by important buildings and monuments, it’s a great place to learn about the city’s history and enjoy a leisurely walk. Locals usually gather here in the afternoon to sing and dance, so it’s a great spot for people watching, but please don’t resume to that! Go talk to them and dance together – it’s one of my favorite memories while traveling!

5. Explore Devil’s Gate (Puerta del Diablo)

Puerta del Diablo, or Devil’s Gate, is a dramatic rock formation offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a popular spot for hiking, rock climbing, and enjoying panoramic vistas. The adventurous can explore the caves and crevices, while others might prefer to simply take in the scenery from the viewpoint.

6. El Boquerón National Park:

Hike to the top of this majestic volcano, which offers spectacular views of San Salvador and its massive crater. It’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and hikers. We didn’t have time to do this hike, but we later climbed Santa Ana volcano, and my suggestion would be to do at least one volcano hike in El Salvador – because it’s one of the most important features of this country!

7. Mercado Central:

A visit to the central market is always an excellent place to try local foods, buy handicrafts, and experience the daily life of Salvadorans.

8. Museo de Arte de El Salvador (MARTE):

For art lovers, a visit to MARTE is essential. This museum showcases a diverse collection of Salvadoran and Latin American art, providing a deep dive into the region’s cultural expression.

9. Eat Pupusas

No trip to San Salvador is complete without tasting pupusas, the country’s national dish. These thick corn tortillas are filled with various ingredients such as cheese, beans, chicharrón (pork). It’s a delicious, cheap and fast meal you will find mostly everywhere.

10. Try Salvadoran Coffee

El Salvador is renowned for its high-quality coffee, and San Salvador offers numerous cafes where you can sample it. Head to Café Fulanos or Bistro San Lorenzo to enjoy a freshly brewed cup. For a more immersive experience, consider a coffee tour at a nearby plantation such as Finca San Ernesto where you can learn about the coffee production process from bean to cup.
