Luxor is probably my favorite city in Egypt. It’s often referred to as the world’s greatest open-air museum and it’s not hard to understand why once you step your foot here. In this blog post, I’ll share a complete guide to Luxor from  my personal experience, offering insights into the best areas to stay, the perfect time to visit, must-see attractions & ways to explore the city.

When to Visit Luxor:

It would be reccommended to plan your trip for the cooler months, from October to April. During this period, the weather is pleasant, making exploration and outdoor activities much more enjoyable. Summer months would make your experience unpleasant, because almost every attraction in Luxor is outdoor. I visited Luxor in May and while the temperature sometimes reached 40 degrees Celsius, it was still bearable, but we love heat, so maybe for you wouldn’t be so pleasant…

Where to Stay in Luxor:

There are 2 main options in terms of accommodation, since Luxor sits on both sides of the Nile.

Luxor East Bank: This side of the Nile River is where you’ll find the majority of hotels and restaurants. It’s a bustling area with easy access to Luxor Temple, the Luxor Museum, and vibrant markets. Staying here provides a mix of convenience and city life.

Luxor West Bank: For a quieter and more serene experience, the West Bank is a fantastic choice. It’s close to the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, and the Temple of Hatshepsut. This area provides a more peaceful ambiance, ideal for travelers seeking a tranquil retreat.
Accommodation recs on the West Bank:

• Nile View Hotel
• In Luxor Nile Apartments

I, personally, stayed on both sides and I prefer the West Bank. It’s not as touristic, it’s more peaceful, close to Valley of the Kings and Queens and it still has plenty of restaurants and cafes.

Wherever you choose to stay, you will still need to cross the Nile a few times because as I mentioned, some attractions sit on the West Bank and other on East Bank.

What to do in Luxor:

There are so many interesting things to do in Luxor that you should definitely plan to spend at least 3 full days in the area!

The Valley of the Kings: It’s an archaeological wonder, home to the tombs of ancient pharaohs like Tutankhamun. The intricate wall paintings and historical significance make it a must-visit.

Karnak Temple Complex: This vast temple complex on Luxor’s East Bank is a jaw-dropping architectural marvel. Explore the Great Hypostyle Hall and be amazed by its massive columns and hieroglyphics.

Luxor Temple: Stroll through its grand entrance and witness its magnificent architecture and ancient stories.

Hot Air Balloon Ride: Rise above Luxor in a hot air balloon for a breathtaking aerial view of the city, the Nile, and the monuments on the West Bank. This is an experience you’ll treasure forever!

Hatshepsut’s Temple: Located near the Valley of the Kings, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is an architectural masterpiece. It’s characterized by its terraced structure against the stunning backdrop of the Theban Mountains.

Colossi of Memnon: These two gigantic statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III are all that remain of a once-grand temple. The statues are especially impressive at sunrise or sunset.

Getting around:

Tuktuks: perfect for short distances and can weave through the city’s bustling streets with ease. You will mostly find them on the West Bank of Luxor. Negotiate the fare with the driver before hopping in, and you’re in for an exciting ride.

Taxis: Comfort and Convenience
Taxis are a more comfortable option for getting around Luxor. You’ll find them readily available throughout the city, especially if you are in a touristic place, there will be plenty of people asking ‘taxi, taxi’. Ensure the taxi driver uses the meter or agree on a fare before starting the journey to avoid any misunderstandings.

Feluccas: A Tranquil Nile Experience
To experience Luxor from the unique perspective of the Nile River, opt for a felucca ride. These traditional Egyptian sailboats offer a peaceful and scenic journey. You can arrange private trips or join group tours, often departing from the East Bank. Enjoy the gentle breeze and beautiful views as you glide along the water.

Ferries: Crossing the Mighty Nile
If you need to cross the Nile River, ferries are a practical and cheaper choice. There are several ferry routes connecting the East and West Banks of Luxor.

Horse Carriages: Reliving the Past
For a charming and nostalgic journey, consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride in Luxor. You will find these especially on the West Bank. Make sure you agree on a price before you jump in, because the cost is usually way higher than what you would expect.

Another way to conviniently explore around is to join a tour. This is ideal also if you are short on time, because you will get to many places in a short time.

You can also hire a private driver, especially if you are a group of more than 2 people. It’s not hard to find a driver. They will either approach you on the streets or you can ask a taxi driver how much would he ask for a day of driving you around.

What and where to eat in Luxor:

• Mixed Grill: Try a traditional Egyptian mixed grill, featuring a delicious combination of kebabs, kofta, and shawarma. The flavors are incredible, and it’s a favorite among locals.
• Koshary: This beloved Egyptian dish is a delightful mix of lentils, pasta, rice, and chickpeas, topped with a tangy tomato sauce and crispy fried onions.
• Mango Juice: In Luxor, you’ll find some of the sweetest and juiciest mangoes. Enjoy a refreshing glass of fresh mango juice.
• El Hussein Restaurant: Located on Luxor’s East Bank, this restaurant offers a wide range of Egyptian dishes, and the flavors are simply divine. Don’t miss their mouthwatering lamb kofta.
