GUATAPE – The most underrated city in Colombia

Guatapé, Colombia, holds a special place in my heart, with its vibrant streets, its decorated houses and breathtaking natural landscapes. It’s a destination that captures the essence of Colombian charm and offers an experience unlike any other. Guatape is not usually on every tourist’s radar, but it’s definitely a place that should not be missed.

I loved this city so much that I made a video for you with things to see and do in Guatape which I hope will convince you not just to visit it, but to spend more time here.

One day trip vs Overnight stay in Guatape:

When deciding between a day trip or an overnight stay in Guatapé, I highly recommend considering an overnight stay to truly immerse oneself in the beauty and culture of this captivating city. While a day trip allows for a glimpse of Guatapé’s charm, spending more time here offers the opportunity to delve deeper into its rich tapestry of experiences and interact with the incredibly friendly locals.

However, if you have a limited time, joining a guided tour can provide a valuable overview of the city’s highlights. Regardless of the duration of your visit, Guatape is a must visit destination.

    Where to Stay in Guatape:

In Guatapé, you have a variety of accommodation options to choose from. If you’re like me and enjoy immersing yourself in local culture, opt for one of the cozy guesthouses. Alternatively, you can treat yourself to the tranquility of lakeside resorts or vacation rentals, where you can wake up to stunning views and easy access to outdoor adventures.

    Budget accommodations (<50$/night):

Finca-hotel Montecarlo – we stayed here. It’s a bit outside the center, but not more than 20 minutes walking, it’s in a quiet place with beautiful views of the lake and Piedra del penol.

Hotel Real Guatape – located right in the center, good quality price ratio.

    Medium budget accomodation options (50-100$/night):

Hotel Santorini – features a rooftop pool with views over the lake.

Hotel Verony Guatape – features a big pool, large bedrooms, beautiful views.

    Luxury accommodations (>100$/night):

BubbleSky Glamping Guatape – beautiful glamping domes, breakfast included, unique accommodation.

Hotel La Magdalena – adult only resort.

Things to See and Do in Guatape:

    • El Peñol: My journey in Guatapé wouldn’t be complete without climbing the iconic El Peñol. Those 740 steps lead to breathtaking panoramic views that are simply unforgettable.

    • Exploring the Town: Wander through the streets adorned with vibrant murals that tell stories of local life and culture.
      –
Plazoleta los zocalos: absolute favorite places in town. It’s the most colorful place in town, with artistic representation held here almost daily. Tip: get a coffee or a cocktail at Cafe da Vina and enjoy the show from above,
      – Don’t forget to stroll along the waterfront promenade, where you can soak in the charm of the colorful boats and the serene reservoir.
    • Boat Tours: One of the highlights of my trip was embarking on a boat tour of the Guatapé reservoir. The tour will show you the most important attractions on the lake. I would reccommend to do this at sunset as it makes the experience even more special.

    • Water Sports: For the adventurous souls, Guatapé offers a plethora of water sports activities, from kayaking to jet skiing. There’s something for everyone to enjoy amidst the crystal-clear waters.
    • Sampling Local Cuisine: Indulge in the flavors of Colombia by exploring the town’s markets and savoring traditional dishes at local restaurants. There’s nothing like enjoying a refreshing cocktail at a lakeside bar as the sun sets on another beautiful day in Guatapé.

    Safety in Guatape:

While Guatapé is generally safe for visitors, it’s essential to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid wandering alone in unfamiliar places after dark. Stay informed about local safety guidelines and don’t hesitate to seek assistance from local authorities if needed.

In essence, Guatapé is a gem waiting to be discovered, offering a perfect blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re marveling at the views from El Peñol, exploring the town’s charming streets, or simply soaking in the laid-back vibe by the reservoir, Guatapé promises an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left its shores.
