Istanbul – Complete guide for first-time travellers

I visited Istanbul for the first time this summer. I’d always wanted to visit it but somehow I never had the chance even though it’s so close to my hometown. I knew I would enjoy Istanbul, but honestly I was not expecting to have such an unforgettable adventure.

Istanbul is a unique place, where old and new things come together. It’s a city where traditions mix with new ideas, and every street has a story to tell.

In this blog, I want to share my journey in Istanbul as a first-time visitor. We’ll explore the old neighborhoods, try delicious Turkish food, and find hidden treasures that make this city so special. Whether you’re planning your own trip to Istanbul or just curious about what it’s like, let’s start our adventure and discover the magic of Istanbul together, step by step.

    Accommodation: Where to Stay

Choosing where to stay in Istanbul largely depends on your preferences, budget, and the type of experience you’re seeking. Istanbul is a vast city with a diverse range of neighborhoods, each offering a unique atmosphere and attractions. Here are some popular areas to consider for travelers:

    • Sultanahmet: this was our choice. It’s ideal for first time visitors as this area is home to iconic sites like the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. You’ll find many boutique hotels and cozy guesthouses here.

Budget recommendation: Asparagus Hotel & Suites

4 Star hotel recommendation: Sultan Tughra Hotel

    • Taksim Square & Istiklal Street: Perfect for those seeking a lively atmosphere, Taksim Square is the heart of modern Istanbul. It’s known for its upscale hotels and easy access to Istiklal Street, a bustling shopping and dining hub.

    • Kadıköy: On the Asian side of Istanbul, Kadıköy offers a more local experience with charming streets, excellent food, and a variety of boutique hotels. We would have loved to spend one night here, because the vibe was great, especially during the weekend.

    Transportation: Getting Around

Istanbul is a huge city, but getting around is relatively easy:

Public Transportation: Istanbul has an extensive public transport network, including trams, buses, ferries, and a modern metro system.

Tip: Consider purchasing an Istanbulkart for convenient and cost-effective travel. Keep in mind that you can only charge the card by cash.

Tip2: Download Moovit, don’t just relay on Google Maps because sometimes it’s not working properly.

Taxi and Ridesharing: Taxis and ridesharing services like Uber are readily available. Ensure the meter is running or agree on a fare before starting your journey.

Walking: Many of Istanbul’s attractions are within walking distance of each other, especially in Sultanahmet. We walked around 10-15 kilometers a day, but this was a great way to see the city.

Tip: take your most comfortable shoes in Istanbul, because you will climb a lot.

What to see and do in Istanbul as a first-timer:

There’s no end to things you can see and do in Istanbul, but as a first timer, there are some you shouldn’t miss:

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque): Named for its magnificent blue tiles, the Blue Mosque is an architectural wonder.

Hagia Sophia: This architectural masterpiece has a history spanning over a millennium, serving as a church, mosque, and now a museum. Don’t miss the stunning interior and breathtaking dome.

Grand Bazaar: Dive into the labyrinthine alleys of one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. You will find souvenirs, textiles, spices, gold and silver jewlery, perfumes and many more. The prices are always higher here in the bazaar because it’s a touristic place, so make sure to bargain.

Bosphorus Cruise: Take a relaxing cruise along the Bosphorus Strait, admiring the picturesque cityscape and historic landmarks. This was one of the highlights for me. It was so much fun!

Topkapi Palace: Explore the opulent former residence of Ottoman sultans. Highlights include the Harem, the Imperial Treasury, and stunning views of the Bosphorus.

Balat neighborhood: Balat is a captivating neighborhood in Istanbul that has been gaining popularity among travelers for its unique and authentic atmosphere. It’s a feast for the eye with its vibrant houses, vintage storefronts, and charming cobblestone streets.

Istiklal street: The street is lined with a vast array of shops, boutiques, and department stores. From high-end international brands to local designer boutiques and vintage shops, Istiklal Street offers something for every shopper. A charming red tram runs along Istiklal Street, adding to its unique atmosphere.

Turkish Cuisine: Savor Istanbul’s culinary delights, from kebabs and baklava to mezes and Turkish delight. Don’t forget to try a traditional Turkish breakfast. If food is your passion, you can even join a food tour to make sure you try everything.

Tip: My favorite baklava is at Karaköy Güllüoğlu – thank me later!
