ULTIMATE GUIDE TO OMETEPE ISLAND: NICARAGUA’S NATURAL PARADISE

Ometepe island is a spectacular place to visit in Nicaragua! Imagine an island, formed of 2 volcanoes, in a middle of a giant lake… And apart from the majestic volcanoes, this unique island boasts lush forests, diverse wildlife, and serene beaches, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. We spent one week on the island and it was probably our favorite place in Nicaragua (hard to say for sure as we loved every place!).

As with all the places I love, I filmed a day on this beautiful island so you can get an idea of the beauty of Ometepe Island (featured in the video are our favorite spots on Ometepe Island)

How to get to Ometepe Island

Getting to Ometepe Island involves traveling to the main departure point on the Nicaraguan mainland and then taking a ferry to the island. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reach Ometepe:

Step 1: Travel to San Jorge

San Jorge is the primary ferry port for boats to Ometepe. Here’s how to get there:

From Managua (the capital of Nicaragua)

By Bus: Take a bus from Managua’s Mercado Huembes bus terminal to Rivas. Buses leave regularly and the trip takes about 2-3 hours. From Rivas, take a short taxi ride (about 10 minutes) to the port of San Jorge.

By Taxi: Taxis can be hired directly from Managua to San Jorge. This option is faster and more convenient but more expensive. The trip takes about 1.5-2 hours.

By Shuttle: Some tour operators and hotels offer shuttle services from Managua directly to San Jorge. This can be a more comfortable and reliable option.

From Other Major Cities (e.g., Granada, León, San Juan del Sur)

By Bus: Travel by bus to Rivas and then take a taxi to San Jorge.

By Shuttle: Shuttle services are available from popular tourist cities like Granada and León. They can be booked through travel agencies or your accommodation.

Step 2: Take the Ferry or Boat to Ometepe

There are several ferry and boat services that operate between San Jorge and Ometepe Island.
Ferries run several times a day, but schedules can vary, so it’s advisable to check the latest timetable either online or at the port. Services are more frequent in the morning and early afternoon.

Where to stay in Ometepe

Even though there are plenty accommodation options around the island, there are 2 areas more popular.

1. Moyogalpa

We stayed in this area for our 7 days on Ometepe island.
Nathaly Hostal is a good budget option – it also features a small pool, a big garden and a restaurant on site.

• Pros: Moyogalpa is the main port town and the primary entry point to the island. It offers the most convenience in terms of transportation, with regular ferries to and from the mainland. There are many restaurants and shops around.
• Cons: It can be busier and less tranquil compared to other parts of the island.
  

2. Balgüe

Looking back, we would have stayed at least half of our time in this area, because there are many attractions around and it’s also a more traquil and natural place.

El Zopilote is a popular place among backpackers, it’s an eco-friendly accommodation located in a beautiful natural setting offering open-air communal spaces and outdoor seating areas.

El Pital is another great recommended accommodation because of its amazing location right by the lake and also because of the many activities on site.

• Pros: Balgüe is known for its eco-lodges and relaxed atmosphere. It’s close to the Maderas Volcano and offers access to hiking trails, coffee plantations, and beautiful nature. It’s a great spot for those looking to explore the island’s natural beauty.
• Cons: It’s a bit more remote, and the road access can be rough.

Getting around Ometepe Island

No matter where you stay you will be close to some places and far from others so you will need to find a way to get around, because there are so many incredible places to discover!

Rental Motorbikes and Scooters

Renting a motorbike or scooter is one of the most popular ways to explore Ometepe because it offers the freedom to travel at your own pace and reach more remote areas. We rented a scooter for our entire time on the island and it was the best decision.

Beware, the roads can be rough and unpaved in some areas, so riding experience is recommended. Rentals usually cost between $10 to $25 per day. You can rent through your accommodation, or, if you are near the port, rent straight from the company because it will be cheaper.

Bicycles

Renting a bicycle is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to see the island. It’s suitable for shorter distances and offers a great way to enjoy the scenery. Although biking can be challenging due to the hilly terrain, hot weather and big distances. Bicycles usually cost around $5 to $10 per day.

Taxis and Private Drivers

Obviously this is the most expensive option, yet it can be the most convinient especially when needing a transportation to the accommodation from the port. 

Public Buses

The most affordable way to get around, with fares typically under $1. They connect major towns and some smaller communities. Cons: Infrequent schedules, usually running only a few times a day. Buses can be slow and crowded.

Must do on Ometepe Island

Ometepe Island offers a diverse range of activities that cater to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those looking to relax and immerse themselves in the local culture. Here are some top things to do on the island:

1. Hike Volcanoes

This is the main activity tourists come for when visiting Ometepe, and it was among the few activities that we skipped :)) This because it involves a very good physical condition and implies some time to recover after, and we wanted to be able to fully enjoy our time on the island.

• Concepción Volcano: The larger and more challenging of the two volcanoes on Ometepe, offering a strenuous hike with rewarding views from the summit. We skipped this
• Maderas Volcano: A slightly easier hike compared to Concepción, leading through cloud forests to a crater lake. The trail can be muddy but is rich in wildlife and plant life.

2. Visit Ojo de Agua

A natural spring pool with crystal-clear waters. It’s a perfect spot to relax, swim, and enjoy the tranquil environment.

3. Explore Petroglyphs

Ometepe is home to numerous ancient petroglyphs created by indigenous peoples. These can be found in various locations around the island, particularly near Balgüe and Finca Magdalena.

4. Visit Charco Verde Nature Reserve

A beautiful reserve that includes a lagoon, forest trails, and a butterfly garden. It’s a great spot for hiking, bird watching, and seeing local flora and fauna.

5. Explore Punta Jesus Maria

This is a narrow strip of land extending into Lake Nicaragua, offering stunning views of the sunset and both volcanoes. It’s a popular spot for photos and a peaceful walk.

6. Enjoy the best sunsets at Mango Beach

The best place to see the sunset on Ometepe island has to be Mango Beach. It offers beautiful views of Concepcion Volcano, and the atmosphere is always great – with good music, nice people and delicious food and cocktails.

7. Yoga classes

Ometepe is home to several yoga retreats and wellness centers. These places offer daily yoga classes, meditation sessions, and holistic therapies set against the backdrop of the island’s natural beauty.

8. Party

If you think Ometepe is too tranquil, there are also some parties and events going on.

Raindance, a popular spot on Ometepe Island, is known for its vibrant nightlife and lively atmosphere, making it an excellent place for a party.

El Zopilote pizza night: the highlight of the evening is, of course, the delicious wood-fired pizza. To enhance the experience, El Zopilote often features live music or other forms of entertainment during pizza nights.

Where to eat on Ometepe Island

There are many restaurant around Ometepe, but these 3 were our favorites!

El Pital

They focus on vegan and vegetarian dishes, using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Popular items include smoothie bowls, fresh salads, and hearty sandwiches. They also offer delicious homemade chocolates and desserts.

El Zopilote

The farm is famous for its wood-fired pizzas, especially during their pizza nights, where a variety of pizzas made from fresh, farm-grown ingredients are served. They also offer other dishes like salads, pastas, and baked goods.

Regalo de Dios

It’s a locally-owned restaurant known for its authentic Nicaraguan cuisine and warm hospitality.They offer traditional Nicaraguan dishes such as gallo pinto (rice and beans), grilled meats, plantains, and fresh fish. The portions are generous, and the flavors are authentic.

In Conclusion, I think it’s pretty obvious why I consider Ometepe Island one of the most amazing places, not only in Nicaragua, but from all over the world (it’s a natural wonder after all!). Please take your time and  explore this beautiful island at your own pace!
