What to do in Stockholm in 5 days

by Yasmine

EN: Me and my boyfriend visited Stockholm in September and we spent there 5 awesome days. It soon became one of our favorite cities because of many reasons: beautiful architecture, nice and open-minded people, good food, bicycle-friendly, and many more.

Before giving you tips on what to do, I want to tell you some logistical stuff to make your trip easier.

RO: Eu si iubitul meu am vizitat Stockholm in Septembrie si am petrecut aici 5 zile minunate. Nu a durat mult timp si a devenit unul dintre orasele noastre preferate, datorita mai multor motive: arhitectura, oamenii draguti si open-minded, mancarea buna, infrastructura pentru biciclete si multe altele.

Inainte sa iti spun ce sa faci in Stockholm, as vrea sa iti impartasesc cateva lucruri logistice pentru a-ti usura calatoria.

How to get there:

EN:

We flew with Wizz air from Bucharest and landed at Skvasta airport, which is 90 km away from Stockholm. Out of every option, the most affordable and easy way to get to the city center is by bus. The bus station is right outside the airport and you have to get down at Central Station from where you can get basically anywhere in the city. I’d suggest you buy your tickets online from here.

RO:

De aici poti ajunge oriunde in oras.

Where to stay:

EN:

There are a lot of beautiful hotels and the great thing is that – surprisingly – the prices are not as big as you would expect from Stockholm!

For accommodation, I usually use Booking.com and Airbnb.

This time we found a nice hotel on Booking: Hasselbaken Hotel. It is a little bit far from the city center by foot, but by bicycle/ferry/tram you can get there in approximately 10 minutes.

What we loved most about this hotel was its design, the fact that it provided a lot of activities for its guests (free bicycles, free pool game, and more) and also,  the free breakfast.

RO:

What to do in Stockholm:

EN:

Firstly, I’d recommend you spend at least 4 days in this amazing city to feel its vibe. I guess you could fit a lot of places into a 2 days trip, but I’d suggest you take it slow.

RO:

In primul rand, iti recomand sa petreci minimum 4 zile in orasul asta minunat pentru a te familiariza cu atmosfera. Cred ca poti sa vezi multe lucruri si in 2 zile, dar eu ti-as recomanda sa o iei usor.

Gamla Stan and Stortoget

EN:

How could you visit a city without exploring its old town? So head to Gamla Stan, the city’s old center (it’s actually on a different small island) to admire its cobbled streets and colorful buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Stortoget is the oldest square in Stockholm and the most picturesque one, and also the perfect place to enjoy a coffee.

RO:

National Museum:

EN:

Big museum with free admission. You could easily spend 2 hours here admiring a lot of beautiful art pieces, mostly from Swedish artists but not only. I personally enjoyed most the sculpture courtyard and the top floor exhibitions.

RO:

Royal Palace:

EN:

It is one of the largest palaces in Europe. It is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden and has over 600 rooms. Make sure not to miss the parade of soldiers and the daily changing of the guard.

RO:

Este resedinta oficiala a Majestatii Sale, Regele Suediei si are peste 600 camere. Ar fi frumos sa asistati si la schimbarea garzii care are loc in fiecare zi.

Hallwyl Collection:

EN:

This was our favorite museum in Stockholm! Tip: it’s also with free admission!

The house once belonged to the Count and Countess von Hallwyl. It is a huge mansion, very well maintained, with grandiose details and it displays a lot of art pieces belonging to the Countess who was an antiquities collector. Each room is special and brings you back in time.

RO:

Aceasta casa a apartinul Contelui si Contesei von Hallwyl. Fiecare camera e speciala si te transpune in timp.

Vasa Museum:

EN:

The museum displays a warship that went down on its first voyage in 1628. It was lifted to the surface in 1961 and it was well restored.

The vasa has almost all of its original material and is the only 17th-century ship of this scale to make it to the present day.

RO:

ABBA Museum:

EN:

A popular museum for ABBA lovers! Though it has nice reviews and we like ABBA, we skipped this one to visit other museums. Since we’d love to return to Stockholm, we’ll visit it next time.

RO:

Desi are review-uri bune si ne place ABBA, am ales sa vizitam alte muzee. Dar, avand in vedere ca ne dorim sa ne intoarcem in Stockholm, o sa il vizitam data viitoare.

Moderna Museum:

EN:

It’s great if you’re into modern and contemporary art. Some art pieces are quite weird, but some galleries I really enjoyed.

RO:

E interesant daca iti place arta moderna.

Drottningholm Palace:

EN:

The Palace is situated on the western outskirts of Stockholm. It’s one of Sweden’s three World Heritage Sites.

Drottningholm is in the French style and was conceived in the 17th century. The palace has been the permanent residence of the present royal family since 1981. Still, it is open for visitors all year, except for the south wing where the royal family lives. It’s a nice visit for a half-day trip.

RO:

Subway art tour:

EN:

Stockholm is very popular for its subway art.

Stockholm’s subway system opened in 1950 and has 100 stations. It is often called the world’s longest art gallery because 90 of the stations are decorated. We visited 2 of them but there were 3 more we would have loved to check. Here are the top five stations:

  • T-Centralen
  • Stadion
  • Kungstradgarden
  • Solna Centrum
  • Morby Centrum

RO:

  • T-Centralen

Natural History Museum:

EN:

Another free-admission museum, hosting some interesting permanent exhibitions such as “Evolution”, “Treasures of the Earth’s Interiors” and “Polar regions”. It’s a great museum to visit if you love animals and nature. It’s also great for kids.

RO:

Un alt muzeu cu intrare gratuita, care gazduieste niste colectii permanente foarte interesante “Evolution”, “Treasures of the Earth’s Interiors” and “Polar regions”.

Vintage Shopping in Sodermalm:

EN:

I don’t know if you are into vintage or second-hand shopping but if you are, you’re lucky! In Sodermalm there are a lot of vintage shops with beautiful pieces. I’ll name you the top 3 ones:

  • POP Stockholm: huge shop with pieces from the 60-70’s – women and men clothes
  • Judits Second Hand: beautiful brand clothes, in a perfect condition, at affordable prices (keep in mind that these are designer pieces though) – only for women
  • Modern retro: little shop with beautiful vintage clothes – women and men clothes

Tip: If you’re into second hands you should also check the Myrorna shops – these are in almost every neighborhood and their products are really nice and cheap!

RO:

Go for fika:

EN:

Fika can be translated as “coffee and cake break”. It is an important concept of Swedish culture. It’s about slowing down and enjoying time with friends and colleagues, whilst you sip a coffee and enjoy something sweet.

Therefore, you’ll find a lot of cute bakeries in all neighborhoods. My recommendation for you is Vette-Katten cafe (best cinnamon bun!) near T-central and Gunnarsons Specialkonditori in Sodermalm district. !Tip: these cafes offer free refillable coffee as long as you serve anything in their local.

RO:

Astfel, vei gasi multe patiserii dragute in toate cartierele. Recomandarea mea ar fi Vette-Katten (cel mai bun rulou cu scortisoara!) in apropiere de T-central si Gunnarsons Specialkonditori in cartierul Sodermalm. !Tip: aceste patiserii ofera cafea gratuita atat timp cat servesti ceva in localul lor.
